Chinooks have supported the U.S. Army based in Germany since 1969, and the type gaining the nickname 'Big Windy' due to the wind stirring up huge rotors. The CH-47C is outwardly similar to the earlier CH-47A and B models, but it is powered by two 3750 hp T55-L-11C engines and is capable of lifting a load nearly equal to the A model's gross weight.

The Army acquired a total of 270 Boeing-built CH-47Cs, plus in 1985, a further eleven built by Agusta in Italy, which were initially built for Iran. The Chinook remains in service today with the U.S Army in large numbers, as well as with the air arms of many overseas countries, including Australia, whose Air Force took delivery of twelve in 1975 for operation by No.12 Squadron based at Amberley, Queensland, in support of the Army. A15-007 is one of these and is depicted in the RAAF's camouflage scheme.
