HA1341 A-10C Thunderbolt II 80-0283, 25th FS, 51st FW, Osan Air Base, 2015
In 2015, the 25th Fighter Squadron, part of the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base, South Korea, operated the A-10C Thunderbolt II. Nicknamed the "Assam Draggins," the 25th FS provided close air support, forward air control, and combat search and rescue missions in the Korean Peninsula. Flying the upgraded A-10C, with enhanced avionics and precision weapon capabilities, the unit trained extensively alongside Republic of Korea forces to maintain readiness against potential threats from North Korea. The A-10C's durability, firepower, and long loiter time made it a key asset in the region's deterrence and defence strategy.
Fairchild A-10C Thunderbolt II
Designed to counter criticism that the US Air Force wasn't serious enough about close air support, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was first flown on May 10, 1972. The Thunderbolt II is a single-seat attack aircraft used to protect ground forces from tanks, armoured vehicles and other ground targets. Nicknamed "Warthog," the A-10 is highly manoeuvrable at low speeds and low altitude and is capable of short take-offs and landings. It is designed for easy maintenance-many of its parts are interchangeable between the right and left side and it can operate from bases with limited facilities. The A-10 is expected to remain in service until 2028 or beyond.
