Otto Kath was shot down on July 19, 1940 and again on July 24, 1941 and survived both times. From March 29, 1941 until February 3, 1943 Oblt. Kath was appointed Geschw.Adj./JG 54. In December 1941 Oblt. Otto Kath was assigned Bf-109-4 W. Nr. 7243 and ended the war with 6 victories. Otto Kath regularly flew as wingman for Kommodore Hannes Trauloft, who is credited with 58 victories. JG 54 operated from 1939 until 1945. The unit wore the distinctive green heart emblem.
Early 1940 began with design improvements with the Bf-109 as well as the addition of the new DB 601E engine. A redesigned cowling and a repositioning of the air intake for the supercharger along with a larger propeller hub also helped reduce drag. The overall airscrew diameter was reduced by 4 inches by using wider blades. The most noticeable change was the removal of the tail-plane bracing struts. The result of this program was the Bf 109F
