In 1941, during the Siege of Malta, Flight Lieutenant George Burgess served with No. 69 Squadron RAF, flying Hawker Hurricanes. Though 69 Squadron primarily conducted reconnaissance missions, some pilots, including Burgess, took part in defensive operations against relentless Axis air raids. Operating from Luqa airfield, Burgess and his comrades faced daily Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica attacks. Despite limited resources, they played a crucial role in maintaining Malta's resistance and relaying vital intelligence. Burgess's efforts contributed to the island's survival, earning Malta the George Cross for heroism. His service remains a testament to the bravery of RAF personnel during WWII.
The Hawker Hurricane was the first British single-engine fighter and the first single wing aircraft with retractable landing gear as well as an enclosed cockpit and 8 machine guns. The Hurricane went into operational service in December 1937 with the RAF 111 Squadron. The Hurricane is usually over looked as a major player in the BoB because of the Spitfire but 80% of the 1,792 German aircraft shot down were because of the Hurricane. There were 14,533 Hurricanes produced in all variants.
